Celebrating 100 Years – Our Centenary!
CENTENARY!!! An occasion that comes only once in a lifetime. An occasion we all need to cherish and to feel proud, on being a part of the celebrations. As we celebrate the Centenary of our Church, let us take a look down memory lane.
A Glance at the History
The ‘Examiner’ of 1887 and 1888 mentions the existence of a Chapel, built shortly before 1886, structurally attached to the home of Mr. Jose Correa D’Aguiar. The same was blessed on 23 January 1887 by the Pro-Vicar Apostolic, Fr. J. Willy. The Jesuits were invited to be the ordinary chaplains of this Chapel at Katemanivli.
In 1889, the owner, Mr. D’Aguiar, was told by Rome that since the Chapel was his private property, he was free to close it or sell it, but it would be better to place it under the Bishop of Daman. In 1907, the plot of land where the Chapel stood was purchased by Archbishop Dom Sebastian Pereira.
In 1918, there were about 300 Catholics living in the GIP Railway Quarters at Kalyan. They attended services at the Katemanavali Chapel. In 1932, the Parish of Kalyan (West) was created, and the Katemanavali Chapel was closed. However, in 1950, due to frequent appeals by Catholics in the East, it was re-opened.
In 1969, Fr. Ross Fernandes became the first Parish Priest and re-opened the Primary School. Since then, our Parish has grown from 50 families to around 3000 parishioners. Today, we stand united with a rich history and a strong faith community.

Our Parish has always been a symbol of unity in diversity, with multilingual parishioners coming from all parts of the nation yet living as one united family in Christ.
While many of us were not part of this history, we are all invited to become the future by joining the various Cells and Associations, contributing to the growth and mission of our Parish.
